Whey protein powder is derived from whey which is the liquid by-product of cheese production. In the past it was discarded as waste until its health benefits were better understood. It is now marketed and used as a dietary supplement for many different uses but mainly sports enthusiasts and bodybuilders. Whey protein powder is widely known to be easily and rapidly digestible. Whey protein powder is also used after a workout to facilitate the increase of amino acids in the blood which in turn is used by the muscles to increase their mass. The protein powder that comes from whey is also known to increase blood flow during exercise by inhibiting an enzyme that originally constricts the blood vessels. This action then allows the better flow of nutrients to the muscle tissues that need repair and rebuilding. Whey protein powder is generally available in three different forms, concentrate, hydrolysate, and isolate. A concentrate usually contains a low level of fat and cholesterol with higher levels of other compounds. Hydrolysates are pre-digested and partially hydrolyzed whey proteins. These are more easily absorbed into the body but are generally more costly than the other forms. They may also be less like to cause an allergic reaction than other proteins powder.  Isolates are the end result of a process that removes the lactose and fat. Which in turn lowers the concentrations of bioactive compounds.
